The Train Journey

This will give an idea of the train route. We will leave from Haydarpasa station in Istanbul and go via Eskesehir to Ankara and then on via Kayseri, Malatya and Elazig to Tatvan. There we take a ferry across Lake Van which connects with another train at Van.
At this point there are optional side-trips to Kampavan, Wytevan and Iskreemvan.
I may have made that last bit up.

The train then crosses the border into Iran and we leave the train at Tabriz.
Sounds easy doesn't it ? But it takes from late evening Wednesday until early morning Saturday.

If you want to see pics of Haydarpasa and the train  - http://www.seat61.com./Iran.htm

And - if you really have time on your hands there is a video and some photos (someone else's) at http://www.sandergroen.nl/english/tehranexpress/index.htm

Looks a bit less formal than a European train journey doesn't it ? And definitely a welcome change from the Metropolitan Line.
